Indiscipline in SHS: Gov't has permitted school heads to search students - Deputy Education Minister
According to the Deputy Minister, the Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu has given permission to managements of secondary schools to search students as part of measures to resolve indiscipline amongst SHS students, which hitherto was never permitted under the previous government.
In addition, he noted that PTA meetings have been restored to allow teachers and guardians of students deliberate on more improved ways to discipline students.
Dr. Apaak said the policies are only two of many others yet to be rolled out by government.
The Builsa South MP further disclosed that the Education Minister has directed the Director General of Ghana Education Service (GES) to work with the GES council to initiate further immediate interventions, as government work to implement holistic reforms recommended by Ghanaian via the National Education Forum.
“What is happening in our secondary schools clearly justifies our campaign promise to review the implementation of the Free Senior High School [FSHS] Programme,” Dr. Apaak stated assuring the public of government’s commitment to improve and sustain the Free SHS policy.
The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has issued a stern ultimatum to the Ghana Education Service (GES), demanding immediate reforms to tackle increasing violence and indiscipline in schools.
The association has called for the announcement of tough disciplinary actions by May 31, 2025, or it will be forced to take some action to protect teachers.
In a statement on Wednesday, May 21, 2025 NAGRAT detailed alarming incidents of student attacks on teachers and the presence of weapons such as guns and machetes in schools.
The association said the school environment is becoming increasingly unsafe, not only for teachers but also for students who are serious about learning.
