RIO DE JANEIRO -- With the leaders of China and Russia absent from this year's BRICS summit, India sees an opportunity to take the initiative and expand its influence within the group of emerging markets.

In a speech delivered on the summit's opening day Sunday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored how BRICS was formed to represent the developing world.
