Increase in Schengen Visa Applications from India for Summer

According to Atlys, a digital visa-processing platform, there has been a 29% year-on-year increase in Schengen visa applications from Indian travelers, signaling a strong resurgence in interest for European holidays as summer approaches. This heightened demand stems from both metro and tier-two cities, predominantly driven by Gen Z and Millennial travelers. These younger generations are increasingly favoring destinations such as Portugal, Greece, Spain and Italy, drawn by the allure of cultural immersion and extended leisure trips.
Southern European countries, celebrated for their Mediterranean climate, rich culinary traditions, and vibrant cultural heritage, have become particularly popular as entry points into the Schengen region. The appeal is bolstered by average summer temperatures ranging from 20–30°C across most Schengen countries, providing ideal conditions for travel and exploration. Atlys reports a 23.5% year-on-year increase in visa applications specifically from Gen Z and Millennial travelers. Key motivators for these travelers include extended holidays, deep cultural exploration, and unique experiential travel opportunities.
In addition to generational trends, the demand for visas is expanding geographically. While metropolitan cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru continue to contribute the majority of applications, tier-two cities such as Pune, Ahmedabad, and Chandigarh have experienced a notable 17.8% rise in applications. This increase indicates a broadening interest in outbound European travel among a more diverse demographic.
Mohak Nahta, Founder and CEO of Atlys, notes that there is a new wave of Indian travelers who are exploring the world with greater intention and curiosity. He emphasizes that travel today is not merely about visiting famous landmarks but also about deeply experiencing cultures, connecting with people, and creating lasting memories.
Luxury travel demand remains robust for destinations such as France, Italy, and Switzerland, attracting travelers to the French Riviera, Tuscany’s vineyards, and alpine lake resorts. Simultaneously, adventure-seekers are showing increased interest in Austria, Slovenia, and northern Spain, regions known for their extensive hiking trails, diverse water sports, and nature-centric tourism offerings. The rising demand is anticipated to put additional pressure on visa processing times, highlighting the importance of early planning for prospective travelers.
Atlys aims to simplify the visa application process by offering digital assistance and support across various regions. The consistent appeal of European summers, coupled with this increased demand, underscores India's growing significance as a major outbound tourism market, increasingly propelled by younger, aspirational travelers from across the country.
