Incoming Harambee Stars Coach Benni McCarthy Shares Reason Ronaldo Fell Out With Erik ten Hag
During a match against Tottenham Hotspur in October 2022, he left the bench and went to the dressing room as his team won 2-0.
He played against Fulham on November 6 and never played for the club again. He scored three goals in his final season and had four starts under the Dutchman.
After that he had an explosive interview with journalist Piers Morgan where he blasted Ten Hag and the club's owners.
"The coach didn't have respect for me. So this is why the relationship is the way it is. He keeps saying in the press that he came to me and he likes me...but that it's only for the press, 100%....If you don't have respect for me, I'm never going to have respect for you," he said via ESPN.
His contract was later cancelled and he signed with Saudi Arabia club Al-Nassr, where he has scored 83 goals in 93 games. He won the 2008 Ballon d'Or as a Man United player.
Meanwhile, Ten Hag was fired in October after more than two seasons at the club.

Benni McCarthy was part of Erik ten Hag's coaching staff between 2022 and 2024. The South African said the Portugal captain couldn't fit into Ten Hag's system.
"Ronaldo was varying his game a lot, but it wasn't how Erik wanted to play. So he felt that it just couldn't work. Having Cris in the starting XI wouldn’t work with the way we wanted to play, and that's why Erik preferred Anthony Martial," he said via The Mirror.
He says Ronaldo at Man United couldn't work because of his age.
"He wasn't capable of lasting in the way the manager wanted and expected from his No. 9...You need mettle, you know, and yeah, unfortunately it just didn't work out the way we wanted it to because of Ronaldo's age."
McCarthy left after his contract expired in June 2024 and is set to be appointed as Harambee Stars coach.
earlier reported that McCarthy landed in Kenya ahead of his announcement as Harambee Stars coach.
The Bafana Bafana legend will replace Engin Firat and help build a team to compete at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
