IMD’s heavy rain warning for ghat areas in Pune district

Pune: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) maintained an orange alert for ghat areas in Pune district for the next few days with a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall. While Maharashtra's ghat regions continued to witness heavy rainfall with Shirgaon recording 100mm in 24 hours ending Saturday morning, urban areas across the state experienced scant precipitation during daytime. On Saturday, between 8.30am and 5.30pm, Pune recorded 0.5mm, while Mumbai remained completely dry with nil rainfall. Other major cities like Nashik and Nagpur remained dry. Aurangabad received no measurable rain.

Some ghat stations reported triple-digit rainfall figures—Ambona recorded 118mm and Tamhini ghat received 110mm—while city areas saw minimal showers between 8.30am and 5.30pm.According to IMD forecasts, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places across Konkan & Goa and ghats of Madhya Maharashtra and Gujarat during the next seven days.

Light to moderate rainfall is expected at most places across the region during the same period.Independent weather expert Abhijit Modak said, "The Bay of Bengal's upper air cyclonic circulation has undergone rapid west-northwestward movement. This system has now intensified and positioned itself as a Low-Pressure Area off the Gujarat and Sindh border."The swift movement has resulted in a noticeable reduction in passing showers, Modak said.

"Despite this decrease in rainfall, the influence of the low-pressure system is evident in increased wind gusts, reaching speeds of 50-55 kmph, even under predominantly sunny conditions."He said any significant increase in rainfall will primarily depend on the behavior of the trough associated with this Low-Pressure Area. "We anticipate this trough to move eastward in a phased manner over the next two days, after the current low-pressure system begins to weaken," Modak said."If this eastward progression of the trough aligns favorably, it could once again facilitate moisture incursion and lead to enhanced rainfall over Konkan," he added.
