Huntington girls lacrosse falls in state regional final - Newsday

WESTCHESTER — You didn’t expect Huntington to make anything easy, right?

Very few things have been for the girls lacrosse team during its historic run this spring. Huntington won its first county and Long Island championships in 30 years with thrilling contests, including overtime victories in the Suffolk Class A semifinals and final.

Saturday was no different — except for the result.

Huntington fought back from a four-goal deficit in the fourth quarter to cut Suffern’s lead to one. But the Blue Devils couldn’t make the ultimate comeback as they fell to Suffern, 11-9, in the state Class A girls lacrosse Southeast Regional Final at Lakeland High School.

“If there’s one thing about this team, it’s that we fight back,” midfielder Devon St. John said. “We’re going to come out swinging. You saw our defense at the end, we did not stop sprinting. Even with two seconds left, we thought we could win that game and we showed that. We worked as hard as we possibly could.”

This year’s Huntington team played the program’s first postseason game off Long Island since 1995, when Huntington made the first-ever girls lacrosse state championship game. Although this year’s team couldn’t recreate that magic and reach the state final, the Blue Devils were still proud of accomplishing a feat that hadn’t been done well before any of the current players were born.

“After 30 years, we proved to the whole town that we did have the work ethic, the skill and we could do it,” St. John said. “That’s what we proved. We always knew we could do it, and this year it all came together. I truly love these girls more than anything.”

Huntington concluded the season at 18-3 after winning no more than 10 games in any of their last three seasons.

“We exceeded our expectations, but at the same time, I think we knew we were capable of it,” coach Katie Reilly said. “And every game, we fought tooth and nail.”

St. John had three goals and an assist, Valentina Puccio had two goals and Sabrina Boyle had a goal and an assist for Huntington.

The Blue Devils trailed 10-6 early in the fourth quarter before scoring three goals over four minutes to cut Suffern’s lead to 10-9 with 4:43 left. But Suffern’s Michaela Fay, a junior committed to Maryland, scored her fourth goal with 1:35 left.

Huntington scored the first two goals of the match, but Suffern (16-3) scored six of the final eight goals of the first half, including the final four goals of the second quarter and two over the final 17 seconds to take a 6-4 lead at halftime. Huntington never led in the second half.

St. John said the senior class knew they could be the group to make history, and they accomplished that despite Saturday’s loss.

“We had to fight for all of it,” Reilly said. “We had so many games that were down to the last minute or went into overtime, so we were battle-tested. Every play mattered. We knew we could do it and we actually did it, and they should be so proud of themselves.”
