Humidity central: Mercury crosses 40°C in Ahmedabad after fortnight

Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad turned into a furnace on Tuesday. While Tuesday's 41°C maximum temperature was technically a degree below normal, it was the city's first brush with the 40-degree mark in over two weeks, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

However, the real discomfort was brought on by the suffocating humidity. The air was thick with 53% relative humidity in the morning and a sticky 36% by evening. Even the minimum temperature played its part, hovering at 29.5°C, 2 degrees higher than normal. But hold onto your hats – or rather, your umbrellas. A dramatic shift in weather is brewing. While Wednesday is expected to maintain the 41°C heat, parts of the district could experience sudden relief in the form of light to moderate rain or thundershowers, potentially accompanied by gusty winds ripping through at 40-50 kmph. This chaotic meteorological cocktail is attributed to a trio of atmospheric disturbances: an upper air cyclonic circulation lingering over northeast Rajasthan, another over central Maharashtra, and a third, more ominous system forming over the east-central Arabian Sea off the Karnataka coast, which is poised to develop into a low-pressure area around May 22.The forecast shows temperatures holding steady for the next three days, before potentially dropping by 2-3 degrees.

Meanwhile, the state has already seen some unexpected showers. On Tuesday, 16 talukas received 1mm or more rainfall till 8pm. Visavadar in Junagadh received 62mm of rainfall between 4pm and 6pm, whereas Kotada Sangani in Rajkot received 47mm of rainfall between 6pm and 8pm, and Kunkavav in Amreli received 41mm in the same period. Most of the rainfall was received in the districts of Junagadh, Rajkot, Amreli, Botad, Bharuch, and Bhavnagar. For the next two days, the IMD forecast indicated chances of light to moderate thunderstorms and gusty winds in Sabarkantha, Aravalli, Kheda, Anand, Panchmahal, Dahod, Mahisagar, Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Narmada, Bharuch, Surat, Dang, Navsari, Valsad, and Tapi on Wednesday, and heavy rain in Chhota Udepur, Narmada, and Bharuch, with light to moderate thunderstorms in several parts of north Gujarat, south Gujarat, and parts of Saurashtra on Thursday.

On Friday and Saturday, several parts of coastal south Gujarat and Saurashtra may experience heavy rains, the forecast added.Beyond Ahmedabad, other cities also felt the heat. Kandla registered the highest maximum temperature at 42°C, followed by Rajkot at 41.3°C, Amreli at 40.9°C, and Surendranagar at 40.8°C.
