How to Get Rid Of Greenflies - 6 Greenfly Repelling Hacks

Published 11 hours ago4 minute read

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is warning gardeners to remain vigilant as aphids, also known as greenflies, continue to plague gardens this season.

This recent population surge, which is likely due to the warmer weather, is becoming a nuisance for gardeners as they quickly infest plants, weaken vegetation, and even find their way indoors.

To help homeowners avoid these unwanted visitors, experts at Mesh Direct – a UK-based business selling inset mesh – have shared their top tips for repelling these pests.

"Prevention is key. Take proactive measures to keep pests out of your home and garden, with a combination of insect mesh, natural repellents, and good housekeeping practices, you can enjoy a peaceful and bug-free summer season," says Dan Hancock, Managing Director at Mesh Direct. Read on for his top tips...

Greenflies are naturally repelled by certain strong scents. In particular, garlic, mint, and neem are known to deter them effectively.

Dan says: "Try placing scented sachets near entry points or using essential oils in diffusers. Planting herbs such as mint or basil near windows can also help keep greenflies at bay while adding greenery to your home."

Although greenflies are more attracted to plants than kitchens, it's still important to keep your home tidy, says Dan.

He adds: "Avoid bringing infested plants indoors and check your garden regularly for early signs of greenfly colonies especially on the undersides of leaves and tender new growth. Prune affected plants and dispose of infested clippings properly to prevent spread."

Natural deterrents can work wonders when used strategically.

Dan adds: "A homemade spray made from water, a few drops of essential oil (like neem or peppermint), and a dash of dish soap can be misted around window sills, door frames, or even houseplants that greenflies may target. Alternatively, introduce ladybirds or lacewings to your garden; both are natural predators of greenflies and can help keep populations under control."

Greenflies can sometimes make their way into homes through small cracks and gaps, especially if they’re carried in by breezes or find their way onto houseplants.

Dan adds: "Check for any structural gaps around windows, doors, and vents, and seal them with caulk or appropriate sealant. If you’re bringing potted plants indoors, inspect them carefully first and isolate any new additions until you're sure they're pest-free."

Invest in insect mesh

Keep greenflies out of your living spaces by installing high-quality insect mesh screens on windows, doors, vents, and soffits, explains Dan.

He adds: "A fine insect mesh acts as a physical barrier, stopping greenflies from entering your home while allowing fresh air to flow freely. As greenflies are particularly small, opt for an extra fine insect mesh to stop even these minuscule invaders from slipping through.

"The best mesh for keeping insects out is a fine mesh with holes no larger than 2mm. For particularly small pests such as greenfly, we recommend extra-fine mesh. There are also flexible mesh options that are ideal for wrapping around plant enclosures."
