Anaemia is a condition where the body lacks enough red blood cells or haemoglobin to deliver oxygen properly. However, while affecting overall health, it also affects the appearance of the tongue. Tap to know how!

Anaemia can cause the tongue to enlarge or swell, leading to a sharp pain. It is caused due to vitamin B12 and folate deficiency.

Anaemia also alters the taste, sometimes can lead to complete loss of taste, due to nerve and papillae damage.

It can also cause the tongue to become dry or have a rough texture, as anaemia reduces saliva production in the mouth.

One of the most common signs of anaemia is a pale or whitish tongue. It happens due to less number of red blood cells and poor oxygen supply.

Small ulcers or sores in the mouth and on the tongue can also indicate anaemia, as it weakens immunity and delays healing process.

Smooth or shiny tongue, also known as glossitis, is caused due to the deficiency of vitamin B12 and iron, making the tongue lose its natural texture.

According to PubMed, anaemia affects the tongue by having glossitis, ulcers, loss of taste, and more. It is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for personalised suggestions.
