Holidays declared for schools in Kodagu

Madikeri: Heavy rain pounded Kodagu district since Tuesday night, hampering normal life. As it continued to rain, on Wednesday evening the district authorities announced that anganwadi centres, schools and PU colleges will be closed on Thursday.

Earlier, a last-minute decision by the authorities to declare a holiday for educational institutions led to confusion among school staff, parents, and students.Almost all the villages in South Kodagu and major parts of North Kodagu witnessed heavy rain since Tuesday evening. However, the district administration announced the holidays for educational institutions after 8am on Wednesday, leading to confusion among the students.Heavy rain was recorded at Srimangala, T Shettigeri, Hudikeri, B Shettigeri, and Bittangala villages in South Kodagu. Heavy showers accompanied by gusty winds has caused disruption in the power supply. Heavy rain poured in Surlabi, Galibeedu, Mukkodlu, and Shanthalli villages in North Kodagu as well. In many places, landslides were reported.During the last 24 hours, Kodagu recorded 60.9 mm of rain. Shanthalli in Somwarpet taluk received the highest amount of 160 mm, while Srimangala in Virajpet taluk received 146 mm of rain. The Harangi reservoir water level as of Wednesday was 2,851.3 feet (maximum 2,859 feet). The inflow to the dam was 4,561 cusecs, while the outflow was maintained at 500 cusecs.
