Highway 402 near London closed after crash spills acid on road

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Middlesex County are warning the public to stay away from Highway 402 going westbound at Centre Road, after a serious crash between a tractor trailer and passenger vehicle caused a chemical leak in the area near Strathroy.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Middlesex County have closed Highway 402 westbound near Strathroy, Ont. after a serious crash between a tractor trailer and passenger vehicle led to a chemical spill.  

Crews responded to the crash Wednesday afternoon after 1 p.m. and found material leaking from the tractor trailer that was carrying approximately 45,000 litres of acid, police said in a news release. 

"The material involved in the spill is potentially hazardous and may pose a threat to public health and safety," police wrote. "Motorists are asked to exercise caution when driving in the area and follow detours."

Highway 402 will be closed westbound from Centre Road to Kerwood Road until Thursday morning to facilitate the cleanup.

The OPP said it's working with emergency responders and the Ministry of the Environment to ensure all individuals in the area remain safe.

They said the driver of a passenger vehicle cut off the tractor trailer, and the truck ended up in the ditch. No one was seriously injured in the crash, police said.
