Hellboy: The Crooked Man — the second reboot of the “Hellboy” movie franchise — is soon going to make its streaming video on demand debut on Hulu.

Directed by Brian Taylor, Hellboy: The Crooked Man debuted on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Oct. 8, 2024. The logline for Hellboy: The Crooked Man reads, “Hellboy and a rookie BPRD agent get stranded in 1950s rural Appalachia. There, they discover a small community haunted by witches, led by a local devil with a troubling connection to Hellboy's past: the Crooked Man.”

Jack Kesy (12 Strong, Baywatch) takes on the role of Hellboy following Ron Perlman’s turn as Big Red in director Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy (2004) and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008), and David Harbour’s revival of the character in 2019’s Hellboy under the direction of Neil Marshall.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man was written by Hellboy comic book creator Mike Mignola, Christopher Golden and Taylor.

According to When to Stream, Hellboy: The Crooked Man will make its SVOD debut on Hulu on Friday, March 7. You must be a Hulu subscriber to watch Hellboy: The Crooked Man on the streaming service. Hulu’s ad-based plan is $9.99 per month and is $18.99 per month for its ad-free plan.

In an interview with AV Club prior to the release of Hellboy on PVOD, Mike Mignola said that the new film moves away from the idea of Big Red being a hero and instead focuses on his plight as an “regular guy” type of character.

“The superhero version isn’t in the comic,” Mignola told AV Club. “It certainly isn’t in that comic. There’s a wonderful period before Hellboy finds out that he’s the Beast of the Apocalypse and things get too gigantic and epic.

“So, since we’re dealing with time before that, it’s much more cut-and-dried, simple,” Mignola added. “‘I’m just a regular guy and I’m running into another regular guy and I’m sort of a demon and he’s sold his soul to a witch, but we’re just a couple of regular guys dealing with a worse than usual day.’”

While Hellboy: The Crooked Man debuted on PVOD instead of playing in North American theaters, the film did, per The Numbers, earn nearly $1.4 million in international ticket sales. According to Variety, the film had a $20 million production budget before prints and advertising costs.

Rotten Tomatoes critics collectively gave Hellboy: The Crooked Man a 39% “rotten” rating based on 36 reviews, while audiences gave the film a 54% “rotten” score on RT’s Popcornmeter based on 500-plus verified user ratings.

The RT Critics Consensus for the film reads, “Hellboy: The Crooked Man buckles under its constraints resulting in an uneven, third-rate bag of all tricks and no treats.”

Hellboy: The Crooked Man will premiere on SVOD on Hulu on March 7.
