Heavy rain lashes state, 4 flights cancelled, schools shut today

Heavy rain battered Ranchi and several parts of Jharkhand on Wednesday a day after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) formally announced the onset of southwest monsoon over the state.Flight operations at the Birsa Munda airport in Ranchi were partially affected as four flights from the city, connecting New Delhi, Ahmedabad and Shamsabad in Hyderabad were cancelled due to bad weather. As a precautionary measure, the Ranchi district administration ordered the closure of all govt and private schools across the district on Thursday. Overnight precipitation snapped power lines and damaged transformers, resulting in power outages lasting eight hours or more in the state capital. Waterlogging was reported in various parts of Ranchi and Jamshedpur. In Bokaro, the district flood control cell will open two radial gates of the Tenughat Dam to release 5,000 cusec water on Thursday. Rain also hit traffic movement.
