Health teams oversee diarrhoea, cholera management in 3 dists

Bhubaneswar: Three different health teams, comprising members from both the Centre and state govt experts, visited Jajpur, Bhadrak, and Cuttack districts on Thursday to oversee the diarrhoea and cholera management by healthcare workers and hospitals in these districts.

They will also advise the district-level health teams on managing the patients and containing the disease.For Jajpur district, the team included director of public health, Dr Nilakantha Mishra, central team's Dr N Somalkar and officials from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The central team's Dr Bhagirathi Dwivedi and Dr S Mohanty, along with additional director of health and family welfare department, Dr Prameela Baral, visited Cuttack district.

Similarly, two central team members, along with joint director of health department Dr Subhasish Mohanty, reviewed the situation in Bhadrak district.These teams are examining various aspects of the diarrhoea prevention and control program in the three districts. According to official sources, the teams are focusing on disinfection of drinking water sources, promoting awareness about consuming water after boiling, ensuring treatment of patients in hospitals as per protocol, collecting accurate patient data and monitoring the block-wise diarrhoea situation.

"They are providing necessary advice to field-level teams and doctors based on the situation. After field visits, these joint expert teams will discuss with the respective core committees of the three districts to assist in determining the future course of action," said an official statement of the health department issued on Thursday.After getting direction from health secretary Aswathy S on Wednesday, a core committee was formed in each district to conduct a review of the diarrhoea situation every evening and prepare a work schedule for the next day. Dr Mishra visited diarrhoea-affected Suanri village under Tangi-Choudwar block in Cuttack district and expressed displeasure over the unhygienic condition of the village. He directed the local officials to take necessary action immediately."Though the number of patients is decreasing compared to earlier days, new cases are still coming to govt hospitals. However, these people come to hospitals early before getting more serious," a health department official said.More than 2,200 diarrhoea cases were reported from six districts, including Jajpur. Around 19 have died from diarrhoea allegedly in Odisha since June 9. On Thursday, more than 30 cases were reported from Udala block in Mayurbhanj district. Health department sources said the situation in the district is under control.Enforcement activities in urban areas are underway in the state. Shops selling stale, unhygienic and adulterated food have been sealed. Even health teams are collecting water and food samples for testing. Chief secretary Manoj Ahuja reviewed the cholera and diarrhoea situation on Wednesday in the presence of secretaries of different departments of the state.
