Hawks planning key next step after massive organizational changes

Published 11 hours ago3 minute read

Atlanta Hawks general manager Onsi Saleh will speak to the media the day after Game 7 of the NBA Finals

The Hawks have already made a firing, a veritable promotion, and two hirings, and the 2025 offseason is still a few days away. Game 7 of the NBA Finals between the Indiana Pacers and Oklahoma City Thunder is set for Sunday, June 22.

The end of the series will signal the start of the offseason around the NBA.

It is unclear how much Saleh will address, but the appearance is highly anticipated and a long time coming from the Hawks.

“Hawks GM Onsi Saleh is now scheduled to hold a pre-draft media availability on Monday afternoon,” “Locked On Hawks” host Brad Rowland reported on X on June 20. “It will be the 1st time he's spoken to the media since joining the organization in 2024.

“Also the 1st media availability for the Hawks front office since Landry Fields was fired.”

The Hawks fired Fields after he oversaw the undoing of their 2022 trade for Dejounte Murray, flipping the one-time All-Star last offseason.

The move set the Hawks up with flexibility this offseason.

Still, Fields was unable to overcome the Hawks’ missing the postseason for a second straight season despite winning four more games during the regular season. The Hawks had hired an outside firm to help hire a president of basketball operations.

However, after being linked to several prominent figures for that role, some of whom removed themselves from consideration, the Hawks settled on Saleh as their top basketball voice.

Saleh is unlikely to reveal anything related to Fields.

He could very well face plenty of questions about the futures of four-time All-Star Trae Young and 2024-25 Most Improved Player and All-Defensive First Team selection Dyson Daniels, both of whom are extension-eligible this offseason.

Young’s max deal is worth $229 million over four years. Daniels stands to earn up to $30-plus million annually

The Hawks also have key free agents in Caris LeVert, Clint Capela, and Larry Nance Jr.

Saleh is well armed as a first-time GM. He has a (super)star in Young, an ascending All-Star in Jalen Johnson, a star role player in Daniels, and promising youngsters in former top-10 picks Onyeka Okongwu and 2024’s No. 1 selection Zaccharie Risacher.

Depth and ceiling are the two issues the Hawks must assess and address this offseason, and the latter will impact their approach to the former.

If the Hawks believe they are close to contending in the East, additions could flow this summer.

However, if they believe they are still a couple of years away at least, which seems unlikely given they were fighting for a top-five seed late into the season, then there could bee more noteworthy departures.

Saleh’s tone and message will speak volumes, hence the added anticipation of his first appearance.
