H1N1 Outbreak: 9 confirmed cases at Anum SHS, 44 suspected at Boso SHS

Nine students of Anum Senior High School in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region have tested positive for the H1N1 influenza virus (Swine Flu), following laboratory tests conducted on 25 samples collected from the school.

In a related development, 44 students of Boso Senior High School have also shown symptoms of the virus.

Samples have been collected from the affected students and submitted to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research for confirmation.

While awaiting the results, all 44 suspected cases have been isolated as a precaution.

According to a report by 3news.com on June 30, 2025, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has supplied both schools with personal protective equipment (PPE), including nose masks and Veronica buckets, to help curb further spread of the virus.

The Service has also appealed for additional logistical support to enhance the national response effort.

“We are appealing for additional logistics to support the ongoing response,” the report said.

Students at the affected schools have been instructed to observe social distancing and wear nose masks at all times.

H1N1, commonly known as swine flu, spreads mainly through respiratory droplets when infected persons cough, sneeze, or talk.

Health officials warn that the risk of transmission is particularly high in overcrowded and poorly ventilated environments, conditions present in many schools across the country.

Experts also note that small, aerosolised particles of the virus can remain airborne for long periods, especially in enclosed spaces with low humidity and limited airflow, making infection control more challenging.

The Asuogyaman District Chief Executive (DCE) nominee, Godwin Bobobee, has visited the affected schools along with other officials to show support and donate essential items to the students.

The Ghana Health Service continues to monitor the situation and urges the public, especially educational institutions, to strictly adhere to recommended preventive measures.
