Gunmen kill Kwara Miyetti Allah chairman Idris Abubakar, police launch investigation

The Kwara State Police Command has launched an investigation into the assassination of the state chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Alhaji Idris Abubakar.

Abubakar, 32, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen around 10 pm on Saturday in front of his residence at Oke Ose, Ilorin East Local Government Area.

Confirming the incident on Sunday, the police spokesperson, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said detectives recovered five expended 7.62mm shells from the scene and his remains had been deposited at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital Mortuary.

“The Kwara State Police Command confirms the murder of Alhaji Idris Abubakar, the chairman of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Kwara State, who was shot dead on 8th March 2025 at the entrance of his residence in Oke Ose, Oke-Oyi,” the statement read.

“The State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) has commenced a full investigation. CP Victor Olaiya, psc(+), assures that the perpetrators will be brought to justice and urges the public to remain calm and provide useful information.”

The Special Assistant to Kwara State on Inter-Community Relations (Fulani), Muhammed Abdullahi, also confirmed Abubakar’s killing, stating that the police had visited the scene and commenced an investigation.

“Yes, he was killed in front of his residence on Saturday night by gunmen who left him for dead,” Abdullahi said. “We are preparing for his janaza as I speak, but the police were here yesterday and have begun an investigation.”

An eyewitness, Aina’u Sarki, recalled her last moments with the deceased.

“I was with him 20 minutes before he was killed. Someone called me on the phone and told me he had been shot dead,” she said.

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association also confirmed the assassination in a statement issued by its Secretary, Alhaji Abdulazeez Mohammed.

“With deep sorrow, we announce the tragic passing of our esteemed Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, Kwara State Chapter, Alhaji Idris Abubakar Sakaina, who was killed by unknown gunmen yesterday at his Okeose residence at about 10 pm,” the statement read.

“He is survived by two wives and six children. May Allah (SWT) grant him mercy, forgive his shortcomings, and admit him into Aljannah Firdausi. His janaza (funeral prayer) will take place today at 10:00 AM in Zango, Ilorin, Kwara State.”

The police have assured the public that efforts are underway to track down those responsible for the killing.
