The Generational Rights Protection Society has suspended its planned protest, originally scheduled for Tuesday, April 29, following a closed-door meeting with the Accra Police Command.

Addressing the press after the meeting on Tuesday, the group’s co-convener, Kwame Appiah-Kubi, stated that although the protest had been postponed, its core objectives had already been achieved.

“We thank the police very much for collaborating with us throughout the protest. Today, Tuesday, April 29, we were supposed to converge at the same location where we ended the demonstration and continue with day two. However, just this morning, a call came through from the Deputy Attorney-General, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, together with the Accra Regional Police Command.

"The message was very simple, they pleaded with us to postpone day two so they could adequately prepare. We believe that, whether it takes a day or two, our purpose has been achieved,” he noted.

The protest, led by media personality Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah, is scheduled to take place from Monday, April 28, to Wednesday, April 30, 2025.

It is a call for urgent action to curb illegal mining activities, popularly referred to as galamsey, which continue to devastate Ghana’s forests, water bodies, and communities.
