Growth, Gratitude, And New Beginnings: Celebrating Pharmacy Residency Graduation | VA Atlanta Health Care | Veterans Affairs
Last week, we proudly witnessed the matriculation of our pharmacy residency graduates—a moment marked not only by accomplishment but by the deep bonds forged through a year of learning, resilience, and compassionate care.
The Chapel at the Joseph Maxwell Cleland Atlanta VAMC was filled with joy and anticipation as our Pharmacy leadership team, alongside proud family and friends, gathered to honor the residents Dr. Allison Johnson, Dr. Roslyn Mays, and Dr. Megan Maree. Together, they celebrated the culmination of countless hours of clinical work, collaboration, and professional growth. As the event commenced, Dr. Kathy Davari, joined virtually, greeted, welcomed, and congratulated the residents, Chaplain Curtis Williams provided the invocation, and Chief of Pharmacy Dr. Jeff Denner shared opening remarks. "Now is the time to choose a new path - something that brings fulfillment. You will spend more time at work than anywhere else - find your place," he noted. Dr. Denner encouraged the residents to use the tools they've gained to do what they love.
Each preceptor echoed congratulatory sentiments and shared personal reflections of their respective mentees. It was clear that everyone arrived with passion, courage to be challenged, an openness to grow, and an unwavering dedication to their patients - and carried that with them to achieve this milestone. They recounted light-hearted stories of case discussions, illustrated stretching personally and professionally, and leading and following as needed. Most notably, each resident learned from the preceptors - and the preceptors from the residents - proving that residencies are mutually beneficial.
During his reflection, Dr. Jeremy Bennett noted, "the storm follows the person" when speaking of Dr. Roslyn Mays. From a Georgia hurricane on the date of her state exam, to medication refusals, a totaled car, and assisting a Veteran near death - she weathered each interval with patience, perseverance, and passion - positively responding to the challenges set before her.
It was clear to everyone that the Pharmacy Residency wasn't just about protocols and rotations - it was about learning who you are as a clinician - and who you're becoming. Throughout the ceremony, preceptors stepped forward one by one, offering heartfelt reflections that painted a vivid portrait of the residents’ journeys.
"We are lucky that we matched with you - the Allison of today would not recognize the Allison of last year - that's a sign of growth," stated Dr. Samantha Merck.
Dr. Odiri Duru declared, "True growth in pharmacy requires facing the unpredictable, and making the residency meaningful - make the time matter, own the moment, your expertise and shine!" She also noted the importance of sharing tough love, Taurus energy, and the power of resilience made her match with second year graduate Megan Maree stronger; helping each other grow in understanding and compassion.
In addition, the residents hosted Graduation Superlatives, an interactive game of guess who, to identify members of the pharmacy team. The winner was treated to a $10 shopping spree at the Veterans Canteen Service by the residents.
As the ceremony ended, the air was filled with a sense of hopeful anticipation. To our graduates: your impact has already begun, and the best is yet to come. We wish you all the success, fulfillment, and continued growth in your careers.
Congratulations - and good luck as you step forward into the next chapter of your journey. We’re proud of you.
