Grimes Cancels Pride Event Performance for 'Family Issues'

Published 1 day ago3 minute read

Grimes will no longer be performing at an upcoming Pride event due to “family issues."

“Hello friends, I am so so sorry and regretful to say I have to cancel my pride show in order to deal with family issues,” the 37-year-old Canadian singer and songwriter (whose real name is Claire Boucher) wrote on X Sunday, May 25.

“I want to say that I am aware the situation has been a great inconvenience to the fans for some time, and I am truly determined to make sure this is no longer the case very soon,” she continued.

The “Welcome to the Opera” singer told her followers, “I think the show is still going to be amazing and the lineup is great. I hope this is early enough and gives people enough time if they wish to change their plans.  And I *will* make this up to you guys very soon.”

“So much love always, G,” she concluded, adding a heart emoji.

Though Grimes did not name the specific event she had to cancel, the singer is named as a performer for Washington, D.C.’s World Pride Music Festival.

The two-day event is set for June 6 and June 7, with Jennifer Lopez and Troye Sivan as the headliners on the respective dates. Additional performers include Paris Hilton, Kim Petras, Rita Ora, Raye, Tinashe, RuPaul and Zedd.

Grimes did not go into detail about her “family issues,” but the musician shares three children with Elon Musk.

She and the Tesla CEO, 53, welcomed their first child, son X Æ A-Xii, in May 2020. The former couple welcomed daughter Exa Dark Sideræl via surrogate in December 2021, and son Techno Mechanicus in June 2022.

Lately, she and Musk have made headlines for their differences in parenting styles.

In early March, she tweeted that she has "begged" her former partner to stop having their children in the public eye or posting them online, even turning to "legal recourse."

Her words were prompted by a fake post on X that purported to show her talking about the "sexuality" of "Fortune 500 CEOs." She also replied to a fan who asked, "How to protect your children from this? Can't you wipe this garbage from the internet?"

"I unfortunately do not control the internet and cannot wipe this from the internet," Grimes told the fan. "I have tried begging the public and my kid's dad to keep them offline, and I've tried legal recourse. I follow you here, I've seen young [people] destroyed by the internet too."

Musk, who is currently a senior advisor to President Donald Trump, was also called out by Grimes after she learned of X Æ A-Xii being in the Oval Office from an X user.

"He should not be in public like this," the singer wrote on X at the time. "I did not see this, thank u for alerting me. But I'm glad he was polite. Sigh."

In February, Grimes sent out a series of since-deleted tweets calling Musk out for allegedly ignoring their child's "medical crisis."

"I am sorry to do this publicly but it is no longer acceptable to ignore this situation. This requires immediate attention,” she wrote in one of the posts.

Reps for Grimes and World Pride did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
