Green Day's speech at the 2025 iHeartRadio Music Awards might sound familiar to movie fans.
On Monday, March 17, the "American Idiot" band won the alternative artist of the year award at the ceremony. While accepting the award, Green Day — comprised of Billie Joe Armstrong, Tré Cool and Mike Dirnt — did the most unserious thing possible: quote the 1997 dramedy Boogie Nights.
Armstrong, 53, took the podium at Los Angeles' Dolby Theatre to read their speech, unfolding the paper from his pocket.
“Wow, I don’t know what to say. I guess, I guess the only thing I can say is that I'll keep rockin’ and rollin’, keep making music and better songs," Armstrong read, trying to contain his laughter while riffing from Mark Wahlberg's Dirk Diggler.
"You know, it seems we make these records and sometimes they're considered filthy by some people," the Green Day frontman continued as Cool, 52, and Dirnt, 52, stifled their giggles like students who forgot a group presentation was due.
"I don't think that's true. The music we make can make people feel better. They can help, they really can, I believe that. We can always do better. I’m gonna keep tryin’ if you keep tryin’. Let’s keep rockin’ and rollin.’ ”
Meanwhile, the speech from Boogie Nights' awards ceremony scene said: "Wow, I don’t know what to say. I guess, I guess the only thing I can say is that celebrities at award shows will keep rockin’ and rollin’, making better acceptance speeches."
"Sometimes these acceptance speeches, they’re considered filthy by some people, but I don’t think that’s true," Wahlberg continued in the scene. "These speeches celebrities make, they can be better. They can help, I really mean that. We can always do better. I’m gonna keep tryin’ if you keep tryin’. Let’s keep rockin’ and rollin,’ man.”

The band shared a clip of the two speeches side-by-side on their Instagram account on March 18. "ALTERNATIVE ARTIST OF THE YEAR !!! @iheartradio," they wrote. "I guess the only thing we can say is... we promise to keep rocking and rolling and keep making music and better songs 🕺🎸."
Fans were in stitches upon realizing where their speech came from. "THE MOST UNSERIOUS BAND EVER (ILY GUYS)😭🖤," one user wrote. "The lack of seriousness in you three is likely my favouritest thing 😂😂😂," another agreed.
"That was the most Green Day thing I've even seen in years!" a third said. One user mentioned they didn't get the Boogie Nights reference at first. "It’s been ages since I’ve seen that movie. I wondered why the speech was so weird 😂," they wrote.

At the 2025 iHeartRadio Music Awards, Green Day was also nominated for alternative song of the year with "Dilemma" and rock artist of the year.
Last year the band was one of two recipients of the Landmark Award. They performed a medley of "Bobby Sox" from Saviors and Dookie's "Basket Case" to celebrate.
