Governor Yusuf extends support to woman with rare muscle disorder

Published 2 days ago2 minute read

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has extended a life-transforming intervention to a young woman living with a rare muscle disorder in a rare compassion to restore hope to the sick.

The victim, Ummi, a 31-year-old Kano indigene battling proximal myopathy, a progressive and debilitating muscle-wasting condition for over 18 years, finally received Governor Yusuf’s benevolent care.

Although the condition was gradually eroding her physical strength and mobility, Ummi was said to have defied all odds to earn a law degree. However, her deteriorating health condition had prevented her from continuing in Law School, where she would be certified as a barrister.

In a statement issued by a spokesperson to the Governor, Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, Ummi’s courageous plea for assistance finally received the Governor’s attention after discreet verification.

“Upon confirmation, the Governor pledged to fully sponsor her medical needs, including mobility aids, therapy equipment, and comprehensive healthcare support—an intervention estimated in millions of naira.

“Governor Yusuf further demonstrated his commitment to her well-being by inviting Ummi to the Government House for a personal meeting. There, he expressed his admiration for her strength and resilience, warmly referring to her as ‘a daughter.’

“Governor Yusuf also introduced Ummi to his daughter, a fellow law student, to offer peer support and mentorship,” the statement read.

In addition to the medical assistance, the Governor announced that Ummi’s caregiver, Amina, would be placed on the Government House payroll. He also pledged food support to the family and promised a memorable Sallah celebration for them.

“This is life. Every soul has its test, its path, its destiny. But what matters is hope and the people who help you carry on,” Governor Yusuf was quoted to have said.

“This act of leadership rooted in empathy and humanity has drawn widespread commendation across Kano and beyond, with many Nigerians hailing Governor Yusuf as a symbol of people-centred governance.

“Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf remains committed to building a government that listens, responds, and uplifts—one that sees every citizen, especially the most vulnerable, as deserving of care, dignity, and opportunity,” the governor’s spokesperson said.
