Governor Wanga Dismisses Betrayal Claims by Kalonzo After Ruto-Raila Pact

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party Chairperson Gladys Wanga has dismissed allegations that former Prime Minister Raila Odinga betrayed Kenyans by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with President William Ruto.

Wanga, who spoke during the International Women’s Day Celebration held on Saturday, March 8, in Homabay County, said yesterday’s partnership agreement between the two leaders was only meant to unite Kenyans.

She went ahead to refute claims that the former prime minister joined President Ruto’s camp for selfish reasons, clarifying that the new broad-based formation was for the benefit of all Kenyans.

According to Wanga, the agreement between Ruto and Raila would help address some of the critical challenges facing Kenyans, including youth unemployment and also encourage inclusivity.

“Yesterday, Raila gave us the lead and told us to enter into the broad-based government and support President Ruto’s administration, and this was not for selfish reasons but for the unity of Kenyans,” Wanga clarified.

She went on to add, "We immensely support Raila Odinga and President Ruto’s efforts to unite the country so that all citizens can benefit. I have seen those saying, this is betrayal; how can unity be betrayal?"

Wanga’s sentiments come a day after Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka termed Odinga's agreement with the Head of State as the highest form of betrayal to Kenyans.

Speaking at the People’s Dialogue Festival in Nairobi on Friday, March 7, Kalonzo urged Kenyans, particularly the youthful generation, to dislodge the new political arrangement, claiming the pact was only for self-interest.

The Azimio principal maintained that despite the signing of the agreement, Raila's support would not secure a re-election for President Ruto in 2027.

"If there is no formula at the KICC today showing how Kenyans are going to compensate their families and the loss of lives due to police brutality, then there is nothing that will come out of KICC other than betrayal," Kalonzo commented.

Kalonzo's sentiments were backed by DAP-Kenya party leader Eugene Wamalwa, who criticised Odinga for allegedly quitting his opposition role to dine with the current regime, adding that history would judge him harshly.

"To those who left their opposition role to join President Ruto's government, history is a harsh judge; may it judge them. We have chosen to side with the Gen Zs, and we have done so with a clear mind," Wamalwa said.
