A section of Kiambu County Governor Kimani Wamatangi's supporters on Tuesday thronged the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) headquarters in Nairobi, protesting his arrest.

In an early morning raid, Wamatangi and nine other senior officials were apprehended over the alleged embezzlement of funds worth Ksh.1.5 billion.

At 12:30 pm, the governor was taken into questioning inside the EACC's precincts to record a statement over the allegations.

Irate over the events, Wamatangi's supporters carried placards and demanded the governor's release.

According to the EACC, the governor and nine other officials were implicated in carrying out fictitious transactions involving a Ksh. 230 million contract awarded to Filtronic International for an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, and a series of suspicious payments allegedly made for non-existent services.

The Authority's CEO Abdi Mohamud confirmed having significant evidence that would be key in prosecuting the suspects in the case. He added that EACC would pursue criminal charges where necessary.

"The discovery of large sums of unexplained cash in the possession of public officials is deeply concerning," Mohamud said.
