Minister of Communications and Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George

The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has announced ongoing efforts to realign Ghana’s telecom landscape through a strategic public-private partnership, which could see the government acquire a 60% stake in AT, a local telecom company.

Addressing the press on Thursday, July 3, 2025, the minister revealed that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has already been signed, signaling the start of what officials are calling a transformational shift in the sector.

The initiative is expected to enhance digital inclusion, attract investment, and drive structural reforms aimed at strengthening Ghana’s ICT infrastructure.

Providing an update on the deal’s progress, Sam George emphasised that the ministry is collaborating closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

“I gave them sixty days to complete the process. They have twenty-four days left. If they do not complete it within that period, I will reopen it for new opportunities and partnerships focused on youth skills development,” the minister stated.

The potential acquisition forms part of broader efforts by the government to leverage bilateral partnerships and private capital to expand digital access, particularly for underserved communities.

He added that if successful, the deal could unlock new funding streams and training programs to support digital literacy and youth employment in emerging technology sectors.
