Government announces new hefty cash rewards for Kenyan medalists

Kenyan athletes are set to reap big following the introduction of a new monetary reward scheme by the government for Olympics and World Athletics Championship medalists.

Sports Permanent Secretary Elijah Mwangi, announced yesterday that all medalists from both the 2023 Budapest World Athletics Championships and last year’s Paris Olympics will soon receive their tokens of appreciation from the government.

Mwangi revealed that under the new reward structure, gold medalists will receive Ksh 3 million, up from 750,000,while silver medalists are set to receive Ksh 2 million from the previous Ksh 500,000, as bronze medalists will now pocket Ksh 1 million, an increment from Ksh 250,000.

The move is aimed at motivating Kenyan Sports men and Women while representing the country in international competitions.

The PS said on Tuesday evening at the Ulinzi Sports Complex during the launch of the 6th Absa Kip Keino Classic Continental Tour set for 31st May 2025.
