Google makes changes to Google Calendar, removes these events starting 2025

Google Calendar has removed automatic listings for Black History Month, Pride Month, and other cultural observances, requiring users to manually add these events starting in 2025. The change, which took effect in mid-2024, comes amid a series of controversial moves by the tech giant following the start of Donald Trump's second presidency.
The company cited scalability issues as the reason for the rollback, stating that "maintaining hundreds of moments manually and consistently globally wasn't scalable or sustainable." Google Calendar will now only display public holidays and national observances sourced from timeanddate.com, a Norway-based company with over 7,600 holidays in its database.
Among the removed default listings are Women's History Month, Indigenous Peoples Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, and Holocaust Remembrance Day. Users who wish to track these events must now add them manually to their calendars, though Google assured that the changes won't affect its celebration of cultural moments through other products, such as Google Doodles.
The calendar modification follows other recent changes at Google, including the company's decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America" on its Maps application for U.S. users, following a presidential executive order signed by Trump on January 20. The company has also announced plans to scale back its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in response to new federal contractor requirements under the Trump administration.

While Google maintains that these cultural moments will still be celebrated across its various platforms, the calendar changes have sparked criticism on social media, with users expressing disappointment over the company's decision to remove automatic recognition of these significant cultural observances.
