Google I/O 2025: Gemini 2.5, Android XR, Veo 3, Imagen 4 and AI Mode Unveiled

Google I/O 2025 showcased significant advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), with a focus on enhancing user experiences across various platforms. Key announcements included updates to Gemini, Search, Android XR, and new AI models for image and video generation.
Imagen 4 and Veo 3: Google unveiled Imagen 4, its next-generation image generation model, featuring faster generation times and improved text rendering. Veo 3, the video generation model, now includes native audio generation, capable of integrating ambient sounds, background music, and dialogues into videos. These models are integrated into the new AI-powered filmmaking app, Flow, which leverages Gemini to generate short video clips from text and image prompts. Imagen 4 is available in the Gemini app, Whisk, Vertex AI, and Workspace apps, with a faster version planned for later release. Veo 3 is accessible to Google AI Ultra subscribers via the Gemini app and Flow, and to enterprises through Vertex AI.
Gemini 2.5 Series: The Gemini 2.5 series receives new capabilities, including Deep Think mode for enhanced reasoning in the Pro model and native audio output via the Live API. The Gemini 2.5 Flash model is updated with improved reasoning, multimodality, code capabilities, and cost-effectiveness. Developers gain access to thought summaries and thinking budgets. Gemini Live's camera and screen-sharing capabilities are rolling out to all iOS and Android users.
AI Mode in Search: Google is powering its AI Mode in Search with a custom Gemini 2.5 model, introducing Deep Search and Live Search features. Users can visually search for products, virtually try on apparel, and use AI agents to track prices and make purchases. AI Overviews is expanding to over 200 countries and 40 languages.
Android XR: Google showcased its Gemini-powered Android XR platform, designed for smart glasses and other wearable devices. These devices will feature integrated cameras, microphones, speakers, and display screens, enabling hands-free conversations with Gemini and control over connected devices. Google is partnering with companies like Samsung to develop these Android XR smart glasses.
Google Beam: Project Starline is now Google Beam, a 3D communications platform that uses an array of cameras and AI to create a 3D light field display. Initial devices will be available to select customers, with wider availability planned through InfoComm 2025.
New AI Plans and Pricing: Google introduced Google AI and Google AI Ultra plans. The former replaces Google One AI Premium at $19.99 per month, while the latter costs $249.99 per month and offers early access to features, higher rate limits, and 30TB of cloud storage. AI Ultra subscribers gain access to Gemini in Chrome, agentic tools, YouTube Premium, and expanded storage.
Other Updates: Google is adding real-time speech translation to Google Meet, supporting English and Spanish initially. The Play Store is receiving updates with new tools for developers to manage subscriptions and improve the user experience.
