Google could be fixing Android Auto's worst gaming feature

Published 21 hours ago2 minute read

Google has been constantly making some changes to Android Auto for a while now. More recently, the Android Auto 14.1 beta update added support for Android games in the main view. However, you can only access the list of games or play them when you have your car parked. Now, Google appears to be updating Android Auto to display games in a new way on your car’s screen.

When you open a game in Android Auto, it generally takes up your entire screen. If you are inside a game menu, this makes it quite difficult to go back to the main menu or even exit the game. In fact, you have to swipe down from the top of the screen to find and use those options.

Well, such a hassle could soon become a thing of the past. Folks over at Android Authority recently dug through Android Auto (version 14.4.152004-release.daily) and found some changes related to how games will appear on your screen. As seen in the screenshots below, games now don’t take up the entire screen.

While Android games still take up the majority of the screen, there’s ample space for the back and app drawer buttons in Android Auto. You can find them on the right side of the screen. The back button works as you’d expect it to. When you are deep inside the game’s menu, the back button will help you head back to the main menu, or even let you exit the game.

Meanwhile, the app drawer opens the app drawer—no surprises there. It’s worth noting that opening the app drawer while in a game in Android Auto will allow that game to run in the background. Therefore, it’s safe to say that the upcoming change will ease the process of navigating through the UI.

Moving on, Android Auto is also tweaking the media player UI, which could relocate all your playback controls. Earlier today, the outlet reported on this and shared a few screenshots related to the change. You can check them below. All that said, there’s no information whether or when these changes will be rolled out to the masses.
