Good Morning Britain's Kate Garraway suffers major setback after husband Derek's death

Good Morning Britain star Kate Garraway has suffered a major setback after her husband Derek Draper's death.

The presenter has revealed she was locked out of her bank accounts, leaving her unable to access both her current and savings accounts.

Kate has been open about her financial struggles in the past, having previously spoken about falling into debt due to the high cost of her late husband Derek's care. He sadly passed away in 2024 at the age of 56 after a long battle with the effects of Covid-19, reports the Mirror.

In a previous admission, Kate shared: "I'm doing something similar myself. I've just had to withdraw the bit you can tax-free for my pension to pay belated bills for my husband that passed away.

"I am ashamed of the fact that I am in debt because I have an incredible job that I love, that's very well paid.

"I'm not a carer travelling miles, paying their own transport to go and help somebody for minimum wage. I'm somebody that is very well paid and so I just feel a shame that I couldn't make it work."

Kate also spoke candidly in her documentary about the financial strain her family faced as she managed Derek's care.

"Derek's care costs more than my salary from ITV and that is before you pay for a mortgage, before you pay any household bills, before you pay for anything for the kids, so we are at a crunch point. I am in debt," she said.

"I can't earn enough money to cover my debt because I am managing Derek's care and I can't even use the money I do have to support Derek's recovery because it's going on the basics all the time."

In a distraught plea for assistance, Kate reached out to her bank on Twitter after being locked out of her accounts on Tuesday (June 17).

The post read: "@Barclays please please get in touch with me - I have not been able to access any of my Barclays accounts current or savings since Friday due to changing my phone handset and can't get through to anyone on customer service - please dm me."

This financial setback comes a month after Kate suffered another challenge. New paperwork from HMRC showed loan debts of almost £140,000 remain from her late husband's company, as well as a £288,000 tax bill.

The company has no more assets and HMRC say attempts to recoup the money are ongoing, although it is thought that Kate does not have the money to pay back currently.

"Kate has met all that the liquidators of Derek's company have asked for and more over the past 4 years. She doesn't recognise these figures and is shocked that's it's being presented in this way by them," a spokesperson for Kate said in a statement.

"Caring for Derek and supporting her family when Derek could no longer run his own businesses has taken a huge financial toll on her but she's determined to put things right. She is in constant contact with HMRC to make sure she honours what's required from Derek's now defunct company."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV1 and ITVX at 6am
