Godfred Dame had military escort as Deputy Attorney General - Dafeamekpor claims
Godfred Dame and Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor
The Majority Chief Whip in Parliament, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has disclosed that Godfred Dame had a military escort while serving as Deputy Attorney General.
According to him, the immediate past Attorney General (AG) was accompanied by a military escort when attending court in 2017/2018, a situation he personally witnessed.
The Member of Parliament for South Dayi further revealed that after Dame was promoted to Attorney General, the number of military personnel assigned to him increased significantly, an admission Dame made during his vetting.
Speaking on Key Points, aired on TV3 on February 22, 2025, Dafeamekpor challenged Dame to deny the claims if they were untrue.
"I will not shy away from this because I encountered the AG in court in 2017/2018. When he arrived, I saw the fanfare and the number of military personnel in his vehicle and another vehicle. As Deputy Attorney General, he had a military escort. He should issue a statement and deny it if he wishes.
"When he became the substantive Attorney General, this issue arose during his vetting, and he admitted it. After his confirmation, the number of military escort vehicles increased," he stated.
Dafeamekpor condemned the practice, emphasizing that the current Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, would not follow in his predecessor’s footsteps.
"I'm making the point that my Attorney General, Dr. Awuni, does not ride to the office in a military convoy, so I have reason to compare their conduct," he added.
His comments come amid ongoing controversy regarding the use of military escorts by some New Patriotic Party (NPP) government officials while in office.
Meanwhile, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has denied using military escorts, despite allegations from some individuals.
