The University of Ghana is grappling with a resurgence of COVID-19 infections, prompting renewed health warnings and a reactivation of safety protocols across its campus.

In a statement issued on Monday, June 23, the University’s Health Services Directorate confirmed both suspected and confirmed cases, urging the entire university community including students, staff, and visitors to take immediate precautions.

“All staff, students, and visitors are strongly advised to remain vigilant and strictly adhere to the recommended preventive measures to reduce the risk of infection and community spread,” the statement noted.

Preventive measures highlighted include proper use of face masks in crowded or enclosed spaces, regular handwashing with soap under running water, use of alcohol-based hand sanitisers, and physical distancing of at least one metre where possible.

The Directorate also discouraged unnecessary gatherings and emphasized the importance of good ventilation in lecture halls, offices, and other indoor spaces.

In response to the current outbreak, the university said it has reinstated its COVID-19 Response Protocols, including screening and triage procedures at all campus health facilities.

Members of the university community experiencing flu-like symptoms were advised to stay at home and seek immediate medical attention. The Directorate assured that the situation is being closely monitored and pledged to provide updates as needed.

The development could have ripple effects beyond Ghana’s borders. According to Statista, around 77,000 Nigerians currently reside in Ghana, with more than 50,000 being men. Many are believed to be students enrolled in institutions like the University of Ghana, making the recent spike a concern for families and policymakers alike.
