Get In-Tommy Hilfiger is Behind the Wheel of "F1® The Movie"

Published 1 day ago3 minute read

This summer, F1 graces the big screen once again. Fans of the sport’s classic titles like Senna, Rush, or more recent Drive to Survive will be thrilled at the prospect of a race suit-clad Brad Pitt battling for glory as fictional driver Sonny Hayes this season. The aptly named F1®The Movie will hit cinemas in the US on June 27, and there’s one thing we have our eyes on: the fashion.

For motorsport’s biggest budget feature in history, Tommy Hilfiger takes the wheel. In recent years more than ever, film nerds have taken to unpicking the sartorial stories behind cinema’s latest and buzziest releases (think J. W. Anderson’s contributions to Challengers and Queer, or the internet frenzy following Conclave’s costume design), and for F1®️ The Movie, Tommy was a natural choice.

Tommy Hilfiger, Tommy Hilfiger

Tommy Hilfiger himself has loved motorsport since the get-go. As a kid, he’d jump the fences of local racetracks and build DIY go-karts in the name of chasing the adrenaline, the thrill, and the classic race-driver cool that come hand-in-hand with the sport.

Fast-forward to 2025 and a major motorsport blockbuster is sponsored by the designer’s namesake brand, while the film’s fictional team, APXGP, also carries the Tommy Hilfiger flag. Tommy is the engine behind the movie, the driving force behind a fictional battle between veteran racer Sonny Hayes (Pitt's character), who returns to racing after a 30-year hiatus, and a rookie Joshua Pearce (played by upcoming star Damson Idris).

But if engrossing yourself in such onscreen thrills simply isn’t enough, you can also make a piece of the action your very own. The APXGP Collection takes the energy of the film, as well as the energy of its star, Damson Idris—who is also Tommy’s menswear brand ambassador. The result is a lineup of timelessly cool and unmistakably Tommy classics that blend speed and sophistication, including racing jackets, mechanic shirts, and graphic polos.

The collection, Tommy Hilfiger says, is about channeling the confidence and adrenaline of F1—the kind of confidence it takes to pull up to the 2025 Met Gala in a full Tommy Hilfiger race suit and a helmet adorned with 20,000 Swarovski crystals (something Idris actually did, if you missed it).

Tommy Hilfiger, Tommy Hilfiger

This isn’t the first time Tommy has immersed itself in the exclusive world of F1. Since the ‘90s, it’s been sponsoring teams like Lotus and Ferrari, collaborating with drivers like Lewis Hamilton, and bringing moto designs subtly into its world.

If we had to put a name to this latest of the brand’s F1-inspired offering, it’d be ‘motorcore prep’. Tommy’s signature varsity style is given a racy update: mechanic shirts are adorned with the APXGP team’s branding, vegan leather jackets are given a part-moto, part-prep makeover, sporty base layers are offset by classic tailored jeans. Most notably, a red quilted jacket is modeled after the exact piece worn by Idris’ character in the film.

As the release date for F1® The Movie approaches both motorsport and preppy styles are still surging in popularity for summer, Tommy Hilfiger is one to watch. The main event may still be yet to come, but the brand has pole position secured. Stay tuned.
