German Foreign Minister: Gaza War Requires Non-Military Solutions
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated in Jerusalem on Sunday that the conflict in Gaza cannot be resolved through military actions alone, emphasizing the necessity of a political solution to achieve a lasting peace. Wadephul stressed the urgent need for Hamas to be disarmed and to relinquish military control over Gaza. He affirmed Germany's commitment to Israel's security, while also asserting the right to criticize Israel's actions, provided it does not devolve into antisemitism.
Wadephul questioned the long-term effectiveness of Israel's military campaign in achieving its strategic goals and ensuring its security. He advocated for a renewed focus on serious negotiations for a ceasefire. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, however, insisted that Hamas bears sole responsibility for the ongoing war and must be defeated.
Both Saar and Wadephul expressed their support for a new U.S. proposal aimed at distributing aid in the Gaza Strip, where residents are facing potential famine due to Israel's blockade. Tikva Forum, representing some relatives of hostages, criticized the aid plan, arguing that aid should be contingent upon Hamas releasing the remaining captives.
Wadephul reiterated that the return of hostages is a top priority for the German government. He affirmed that Gaza is an integral part of the Palestinian territory and called for a political solution for the reconstruction of Gaza without Hamas' involvement. He also opposed the expulsion of Palestinians from Gaza and any permanent occupation of the region.
During his visit, Wadephul planned to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Mohammed Mustafa to further discuss these critical issues.
