- Governor George Natembeya has made explosive allegations, claiming that the government orchestrated an attempt on his life during the funeral of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati.
During a fertilizer distribution event in Trans Nzoia on Friday, March 28, Natembeya expressed deep concerns over his safety, stating that his vocal criticism of President William Ruto's administration has made him a target.
Natembeya alleged that armed men were sent to assassinate him during Chebukati's funeral, relating the plot to his outspoken criticism of Kenya Kwanza.
"The government is not good; the government is full of bad people. Just the other day, over at Chebukati's place, they almost killed me there. They placed goons in that area...," he claimed.
He suggested that his near-death experience was a wake-up call, making him realize the extent to which his opponents were willing to go.
"That’s when I realised that these people could kill me at any time. But I have accepted, my people, so long as even if I go, the seed I am planting in your hearts does not die. Have we understood each other, my people?" he told the crowd.
Natembeya did not hold back in his accusations, openly stating that the government has a history of eliminating perceived threats.
"That is the truth, that is the truth; the government kills people. I know they can eliminate me. But even if I go, my people, remember that Natembeya told us something important," he declared.
Despite the alleged threats, Natembeya vowed not to be silenced, stating that he would continue calling out what he perceives as government failures, insisting that justice must be served.
The governor also criticized President William Ruto's leadership, suggesting that he was struggling to govern effectively.
"If you want to come for me, then come, but justice must be served in Kenya. Honourable President, the government is troubling you. You are reshuffling the Cabinet every day. Raise your hand in 2027 and hand over to someone who can lead the nation of Kenya," he said defiantly.
Natembeya was quick to clarify that his statements were not meant to disrespect the President but rather to hold him accountable.
"I am not insulting him; we must respect the president because he is the leader of Kenya. He is our President, and we love him, but we must tell him when mistakes are made because he is human," he said.
Drawing comparisons between himself and Ruto, he emphasized that no leader should be feared.
"He eats food just like I do, drinks water like me, dreams like me, sleeps under a blanket like me, and was born of a woman just like me. So why should we fear each other? Even I do not want the people of Trans Nzoia to fear me because I am just a human being," he stated.
