The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic road accident that claimed the lives of 22 athletes and officials from Kano State.
The victims, mostly young athletes, were returning from the 2025 National Sports Festival in Ogun State when their vehicle was involved in a fatal crash at Dakatsalle town, approximately 50 kilometres from Kano.
During a condolence visit to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, represented by the Zonal Commanding Officer in Kaduna, Assistant Corps Marshal Ahmed Umar, said the findings of the investigation would be shared with the state government upon completion.
“Let me emphasise that road traffic crashes are not random events. They are caused by human error, environmental conditions, or mechanical failure.
He advocated for closer collaboration between the FRSC and state governments, particularly during long-distance interstate travel by official contingents.
In his response, Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, who represented the governor, expressed profound sorrow over the loss and thanked the FRSC for its concern and swift response.
He noted that the crash site has a long-standing record of fatal accidents and called for urgent government intervention.
