Frigid cold temperatures take over this weekend, help clear out the bad air
SALT LAKE CITY () – Happy Thursday, Utah! Our weather’s been stuck in a holding pattern with a low off the southwest coast and a ridge over Utah and the Great Basin.
Air quality in northern Utah isn’t great right now, thanks to valley inversions. The air quality forecast remains ‘Moderate’ through Friday with above-normal temperatures for northern Utah under the ridge.
By Friday, the low will move south, and a cold front will sweep in from the northwest. This front will break up inversions, bring colder air, and kick off some snow. Snow starts in the mountains Friday morning, spreads across northern Utah by evening, and might even drop a few flakes in the valleys.
Saturday morning could bring lake-effect snow, with the best chances from mid-morning through the afternoon. Snow totals could hit 1-3″ in the Salt Lake Valley and 5-10″ in the Upper Cottonwoods, depending on how things play out. Areas outside of the lake effect bands will likely see little, if any, snow accumulation with only a few inches forecast for the northern mountain ranges.
Temperatures will nosedive after the front moves through. Mild weather Thursday and Friday will be replaced by bitter cold this weekend, with Sunday morning wind chills in the single digits for some areas. Early next week could bring the coldest air we’ve had in two years, with highs in the teens and 20s and lows dipping below zero in some spots.
Beyond that, expect cold, mostly dry weather, with a gradual warmup through the end of next week.
