Fresh Attacks By Suspected Herders Leave Seven Dead In Benue’s Agatu Local Council Area

The affected communities are located within Agatu LGA, a region that has experienced repeated herdsmen-related violence in recent years, leaving many displaced and farming activities disrupted.

Seven farmers have been killed in fresh attacks by suspected herdsmen in the Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State between Wednesday and Thursday morning.

Sources told SaharaReporters that the herdsmen first chased residents from their farms in Obagaji on Wednesday, before launching coordinated attacks on Ogwumogbo and Okpokpolo communities in the early hours of Thursday.

The affected communities are located within Agatu LGA, a region that has experienced repeated herdsmen-related violence in recent years, leaving many displaced and farming activities disrupted.

"The two communities were invaded earlier today (Wednesday)," a resident told SaharaReporters.

"Fulani herdsmen chased people from their farms yesterday at Obagaji community in Agatu and earlier this morning, they invaded Ogwumogbo and Okpokpolo communities in Agatu local government areas of Benue State and killed 7 people," the source said.

"There's no peace in Agatu as some of us claim, we need help," another resident lamented.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer for Benue State Command, Catherine Anene, confirmed that Agatu LGA has been under siege. However, she could not immediately confirm the reported deaths.

She promised to get back to SaharaReporters once more details were available.

Meanwhile, SaharaReporters previously reported that two Nigerian Army officers and seven civilians were killed in April by suspected herders in an attack on the Jato-Aka community in Benue State's Kwande Local Government Area (LGA).

The attacks have caused panic and fear within the affected communities, with residents fleeing for their lives in search of safety.
