Forget Boho, I'm Ready For a "Haute Hippie" Summer | British Vogue
Considering my vocation, you’d think that artfully describing a new fashion aesthetic would be well within my remit – after all, if the Tiktokers can come up with “tomato girl” and “costal grandma”, then surely I can coin something suitably pithy. “It’s, like, kind of surfy, but in a polished sort of way,” I inarticulately explained to a colleague who was probably trying to work. “Like, a shell necklace vibe, but more bouji. Sort of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy crossed with Kate Bosworth in Blue Crush crossed with Professor Trelawney. Know what I mean?” She did not, as it transpired, know what I meant.
But undeterred by the blank stares, I decided to do a social media deep dive to find evidence of the look I had seen taking over the wardrobes of fashion insiders – a look I have now coined “haute hippie” (don’t @ me) – because, as is increasingly the case with these undefinable sartorial “moods”, they seem to emerge, not from the runways, but from a combination of trending niche subcultures, the designs of buzzy independent brands and style-savvy individuals experimenting with their outfits on socials.
I found that Barcelona-based brand Gimaguas captured the mood with its simple sheer shirting, studded belts and swimsuit-tops, as did Aussie label Deiji Studios, via elasticated-waist trousers and bow-tie cotton blouses. I also saw hints of it in the A-list wardrobes of Harry Styles and Mary-Kate Olsen, and in the styling of content creators, such as Blanca Miro, Leandra Medine and Vogue’s very own associate fashion director Maddy Fass. But, more than anything, the crux of the aesthetic seemed to lie in the juxtaposition between clothing and accessories: the former of which erred more minimalist and streamlined, rendered in muted tones of grey, black and white, while the latter felt decidedly crafty and eclectic, with cord necklaces, rope sandals, silken bandanas and crochet totes.
The more I thought about it, the more I saw a throughline with the trends that have emerged in recent years: the return to Calvin Klein’s ’90s greyscale minimalism, as championed by The Row, the craftcore stylings of Gabriela Hearst, and of course, boho’s bells and whistles comeback tour, courtesy of Chemena Kamali at Chloé. Haute hippie sits in the middle of this venn diagram – a glorious amalgam of them all.
So without further ado, I present to you the haute hippie summer capsule: seven staples that will inject your wardrobe with a little minimalist-surf-hippie-but-make-it-bouji. Know what I mean? Of course you do.
