I am always perusing the Amazon Prime Video top 10 list for new series to watch, and usually, I see Reacher near the top no matter what month it is. However, that’s changed recently with series like The Better Sister and Motorheads hanging around. Outside of those, however, there’s a new No. 2 series that has a stunning 97% audience score across its five seasons, with thousands upon thousands of reviews in. And you may have never heard of it.

I think those of us keeping up with action and sci-fi and mystery series on big streaming services fail to recognize that there’s a whole other world out there elevating series that gets almost no press. The show I’m talking about here is The Chosen, which has returned for a new season on Amazon and landed the No. 2 spot.

The first two episodes of The Chosen season 5 have released this past week, and the show will air two more batches of three episodes that will wrap on June 29, as we head into the final hours of Jesus’ life.

Yes, that’s the focus of the show, which actually first aired its pilot all the way back in 2017, before season 1 began in 2019. Now, here in 2025, the show is about to reach its conclusion. Interestingly, the series was set up to already air season 5 in theaters before its streaming release here.

If you don’t believe there’s a huge market for this kind of content, which is outside the mainstream streaming conversation, you’d be wrong. There are 21 total critic reviews across all five seasons of the show, and there aren’t even enough to formulate a Rotten Tomatoes score for the series. But audience scores?

Several of those seasons have more than 5,000 reviews in from viewers, and this show is hugely popular in away few understand. There are so few Christian-focused shows (or movies) made that have high-profile releases that a series like this can thrive, even if ignored by the press.

We saw another stab at this with House of David, another Amazon-airing series following the story of David from the Bible. That aired its first season this past year and has been renewed for season 2. It’s not quite as popular as The Chosen, with a 71% critic score and a 90% audience score. But it had great viewership for a very low cost, and placements in the top 5 on the Amazon top 10 list means it will likely get to see David’s story through to its conclusion.

I’m not endorsing a specific religion here, nor necessarily even recommending the series, but it’s worth noting just how big The Chosen is and how beloved it is among its viewers, despite the fact that large swaths of the public just don’t know it exists.

Pick up my sci-fi novels the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy.
