Flooding concerns return with heavy rain/snowmelt combo

Published 1 month ago4 minute read

Tonight features steady rains working their way into the region, which will lead to ponding on roads, especially after midnight. Once the rain starts, it is not going to stop for some time, with rain expected through the overnight hours. Temperatures will drop down to around 40 degrees with a southerly breeze that will occasionally gust above 20 mph.

Friday will be a wet day, with steady rains expected throughout much of the day, especially during the first half of the day. A general one to two inches of rain can be expected from late Thursday night through the storm’s exit Friday evening, with locally heavier amounts possible. Though our six-hour rainfall flood guidance is 2 to 3 inches for much of southern West Virginia, the ongoing snowmelt taking place throughout the two Virginias in combination with the steady rain will create the potential for high water.

The Weather Prediction Center has placed most of our region in a level one marginal risk for high water, with portions of Nicholas, Greenbrier, Fayette and Pocahontas counties in a level two slight risk for high water. Remember to never try to cross flooded roadways. Ponding on roads is a good bet during the daytime. Despite the abundant rain and clouds, temperatures will climb up into the mid 50s.

Saturday provides plenty of sunshine, with high pressure up to our north nosing in. That system will give us a northerly breeze, which will cool us down into the mid 40s – but we are still beginning the month of February on a slightly warmer than average note!

Sunday sees Saturday’s high pressure system to the north scoot to our northeast and that will allow for a southerly flow to kick back in. This will enable our temperatures to climb nicely once again as we make a run into the mid 50s in what will overall be a fantastic weekend of weather both Saturday and Sunday for the two Virginias with above average temperatures and plenty of sunshine each day.

Monday continues the dry pattern with an upper level ridge sitting over the eastern US. High temperatures will be even warmer in the upper 50s – our western towns should have no trouble reaching 60 degrees!  Skies will increase in clouds as a weak system approaches during the afternoon and early evening. An isolated shower will be possible before midnight.

Tuesday sees a weak front cross which will bring with it the chance for an isolated sprinkle or two. Overall, we will be primarily dry with temperatures a little cooler in the low 50s.

Wednesday features mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the mid to upper 50s once again out ahead of another system which will cross on Thursday.

Thursday provides more chances for rain with another front crossing. This will bring colder air into the region as we head toward next weekend, but Thursday’s temperatures will be mild as we see the mercury reach the upper 50s.

Looking ahead in your extended period, we will continue to be mild for the first full week of February. Another system will provide rain showers chances Thursday into Friday with another system arriving on Sunday that will drag in colder air back into the region. We are not done with winter yet but the prospects for snow look minimal to zero over the next couple of weeks.
