>>Supreme Court issues notice to Karnataka seeking response on ‘Thug Life’ ban
The Supreme Court on Friday sought the State of Karnataka to respond to a petition seeking to ensure the safe and unimpeded screening of Kamal Haasan’s Tamil movie Thug Life in the State. Raajkamal Films International (in which Mr. Haasan is a director), had filed a petition seeking police protection for release of the movie due to opposition from pro-Kannada organisations and the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC).
On June 09, 2025, the Supreme Court had agreed to hear on June 13, 2025 the plea to ensure a smooth screening of Thug Life. Kamal Haasan chose not to tender an apology for his statement that ’Kannada is born out of Tamil’ despite a suggestion made in this regard by the High Court of Karnataka to put an end to the controversy.
