SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - Firefighters across the Ozarks conducted multiple water rescues on Saturday.

Battalion Chief Ben Houston with the Springfield Fire Department said his crews responded to 10 water rescues on Saturday. Chief Houston said crews rescued a person near downtown Springfield who was stuck in a tree, then swept away by the rushing waters.

“Our team used our water rescue boat, so once they got in the boat, it was just a matter of a few minutes to get access to the victim and then getting them back to shore,” said Chief Houston.

Springfield Fire isn’t the only department that worked water rescues Saturday, the Logan-Rogersville Fire Protection District also responded to one. Battlefield Fire helped assist.

“We ended up locating the patient, not hurt, not injured. He was able to self-rescue and get his vehicle out of water onto dry land,” said Grant Peters with the Logan-Rogersville Fire Protection District.

Both firefighters said the main cause of Saturday’s rescues was drivers going over low water crossings and being swept away by the water. They stressed turn around, don’t drown.
