So…she’s saying there’s a chance?
On Wednesday, June 25, appeared on the Call Her Daddy podcast and shared her thoughts about the question that’s been on everyone’s minds since Law & Order: SUV premiered over 25 years ago: Will Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler ever be a couple?
“Maybe on the last episode,” she told host when asked if her and ’s characters will take things to the next level. “I think that’s when they should be together.”
Still, the 61-year-old actress made it clear she doesn’t want sparks to fly between Benson and Stabler if it has to be forced, clarifying that she only wants it to happen “if it’s right.”
“We’ll see when we get there,” the actress added. “Let’s see where the story takes us, you know?”
Hargitay and Meloni, 64, began starring together on the beloved NBC crime drama in 1999. Their undeniable chemistry on screen led to one of TV’s most debated ‘Will they or won’t they’ relationships.
Fans thought the moment had finally come in season 24, when the show hinted at the possibility with a near-kiss (“I want to, I want to, but I can’t,” Benson told Stabler during the emotional scene in episode 12) but it never went any further.

“I think both of us, it was such a long time coming, we just want to make sure and get it right,” Hargitay told the Today show in 2023 of the moment. “The good news is we are so comfortable around each other, it was effortless and fun and we trust each other, it was beautiful that way. We just focused on the work.”
Meloni appeared alongside Hargitay on SVU for 12 seasons, until he left the series in 2011 over failed contract negotiations. In 2021, his character returned to TV in the Peacock spinoff Law & Order: Organized Crime. Since then, both Meloni and Hargitay have made appearances on each other’s respective shows.
“Chris has had a profound impact on my life, my artistry,” the Emmy winner said of the Oz actor during her Call Her Daddy appearance. “We are soulmates in a way.”
“We know each other so well. We love each other so much. We respect each other so much,” added Hargitay. “We connected, obviously, by living these stories and going so deep together for so many years acting, and he and I really bond over comedy. We have a very similar sense of humor.”
