The Federal Government has expressed commitment to harnessing digital technology as a driving force in overhauling the healthcare system.Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Adekunle Salako, who stated this at the 5th Africa Digital Health Summit, observed that the government is determined to strengthen healthcare delivery through the integration of digital innovation, data, and artificial intelligence (AI).

Salako described digital technology as a “cross-cutting enabler” in Nigeria’s journey towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC), and emphasised that digital technology is revolutionising the country, removing physical barriers, enhancing workflow, transforming feedback mechanisms, and improving productivity.

The minister stated that digitalisation is recognised as a cross-cutting enabler of the health sector reform agenda, with the potential to create millions of jobs and unlock the innovative potential of Nigerian youth.

Salako emphasised that digital health innovations must be anchored in ethics and safety. “We must ring-fence our digital health solutions against cyber threats and breaches. Patients’ data must be protected, and solutions must be equitable.”

He said that Nigeria’s Digital in Health Initiative (NDHI) will provide standards, ensure interoperability, and expand job opportunities by tapping into the creative energies of Nigerian youth.

Salako commended the increasing contributions of state governments, digital health focal persons and stressed the need for synergy across all levels of governance to prevent fragmented efforts.

The minister highlighted the risks associated with digital health and called for robust cybersecurity frameworks to protect it against threats, cyberattacks, and data breaches.

He reaffirmed the determination of the ministry to utilise digital health as a vehicle for equity and excellence in healthcare delivery and highlighted the need for partnerships that can bring scalable, sustainable, and inclusive solutions to life.

Salako urged stakeholders to ensure inclusive digital designs that prioritise access for vulnerable populations.
