FG dismisses Atiku spokesman's claim of EFCC chair meeting governors

The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and the Minister of Justice have dismissed as false and malicious recent allegations suggesting that top federal officials met with two governors shortly before they defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement issued on Friday by the Special Assistant to the President on Communication and Publicity at the AGF’s office, Kamarudeen Ogundele, the Federal Government condemned comments made by Mr. Paul Ibe, spokesperson for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, during a televised interview.

Mr. Ibe had reportedly insinuated that the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Solicitor General of the Federation met with both a sitting and a former governor from the South-South region just 48 hours before the duo defected to the APC.

While he did not name the officials involved, Ogundele described the claim as “contemptuous” and a “figment of imagination.”

“We wish to state categorically that the allegation is from the pit of hell,” the statement read. “The EFCC chairman and the Solicitor General of the Federation never met any serving or former governor as alleged.”

The AGF’s office described the insinuation as a calculated attempt to undermine President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s anti-corruption efforts, urging the public to ignore what it termed a “feeble attempt” to tarnish the administration’s integrity.

Reaffirming its commitment to transparency and the rule of law, the office assured Nigerians that the Tinubu administration would not relent in its battle against corruption, regardless of political affiliations.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration will continue to uphold the rule of law and will not falter in the fight against corruption no matter whose ox is gored,” the statement concluded.
