The Federal Government on Wednesday commended Amb. Bankole Adeoye for his re-election as the African Union (AU) Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security at the AU Commission.

Adeoye secured his re-election after defeating Jean Jacques Demafouth of the Central African Republic for another four-year term during the 46th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council in Addis Ababa on Tuesday.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, congratulated Adeoye, describing his re-election as a testament to his outstanding leadership, diplomatic expertise, and unwavering commitment to peace.

In a statement issued by Alkasim Abdulkadir, Special Assistant on Media and Communications Strategy, Tuggar emphasised that Adeoye’s tenure had been marked by significant progress in conflict resolution, good governance, and the strengthening of Africa’s security architecture.

He also lauded Adeoye for his tireless efforts in advancing the AU’s peace and security agenda.

“As Nigeria’s representative at the AU, Adeoye has demonstrated exemplary leadership and dedication to the ideals of African unity, peace, and progress.

“His re-election is a well-deserved recognition of his invaluable contributions. Nigeria remains fully committed to supporting his vision and efforts in fostering a more secure and stable Africa,” said Tuggar.

Tuggar also noted that Adeoye’s reappointment comes at a critical time for Africa, as the continent grapples with complex security challenges such as conflicts, terrorism, and political instability.

He highlighted that Adeoye’s experience and leadership would be key in strengthening peacekeeping initiatives, conflict prevention mechanisms, and regional integration efforts within the AU framework.

The minister expressed confidence that Adeoye’s continued leadership would enhance Africa’s collective response to security challenges, democratic governance, and regional cooperation.

Tuggar further emphasised that Nigeria continues to play a pivotal role in African diplomacy, with Adeoye’s re-election reinforcing the country’s influence and commitment to continental peace and development.

Tuggar also disclosed that Mr Ali Omar, State Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Somalia, presented an award to Adeoye on behalf of the Somali government during the AU Ministerial Committee on Candidatures Within the International System meeting at the AU Headquarters.

The award recognised Adeoye’s exemplary leadership, particularly his contributions to Somalia’s peace efforts. (NAN)
