As a La Masia graduate who grew up near Camp Nou, Pique was talked up as a potential Barca president one day long before retiring towards the end of 2022.
These days he keeps busy with the Kings League he created, but he often speaks out on topics pertaining to his boyhood club.
In a chat with Real Madrid icon and former Spain teammate Iker Casillas, the topic of becoming Barca’s highest leader was brought up.
“Of so many times that people ask you about it, in the end you end up valuing it. Being the president of Barca is much more sacrifice than the positive things it can give you and that is obvious,” Pique first said.
“That is, you look back and see all the presidents of Barca that there have been, the sacrifice they have made is above the return it can give you. I don’t need anything other than what being the president of Barca gives you. But on the other hand I think that if one day the club needs people like me, who have absorbed the club as children, who feel the colors, who understand what the club is from the inside, who know what the masses want... if the club really needs it one day, the responsibility I have is to be there because Barca has given me everything, absolutely everything," Pique added.
On the current crop of young stars that have successfully managed to make it from La Masia to the first team and now top the league under Hansi Flick, Pique believes they are “standing out more out of necessity than confidence” with a nod to the club’s financial woes.
“Because in the end the big question is if Lamine, who has Ballon d’Or potential, would be playing at the time of the club’s heyday. [It’s] the same with Cubarsi, [Alejandro] Balde or Gavi, despite the fact that La Masia has always been an incredible source of resources for a club like Barca and I think it is our identity and our DNA,” Pique concluded.
