has featured just nine times for the Magpies this season as a result of his struggles, with only two of those appearances coming from the start.

He has missed 29 games through injury this term, starting the season with a back injury before suffering a hamstring issue just days after his return.

Since his move to the North East in 2020, the striker has missed 114 games for club and country through injury – just three games short of his total of 117 appearances for Newcastle.

The ongoing injury problems, as well as a dwindling importance to the team and a desire to cut the wage bill at St James’ Park, have eventually forced the club’s hand.

revealed in January that Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin is seen as the replacement for Wilson at Newcastle, and they could make a move in the summer.

Brown, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United after during their most successful period, insisted that Wilson may have to drop down to the Championship after leaving the Magpies.

I hear Wilson will leave Newcastle in the summer,” he told

“His injury record is so poor and it’s a major concern for Newcastle, and then when he has played, he hasn’t done enough to prove he’s worthy of a new deal.

“He’s struggling to make an impression and he’s not going to be part of Eddie Howe’s plans for the future.

“They want to cut their wage bill at Newcastle, too, so this is a good opportunity to do that.

“There aren’t many strikers with his experience available, so there will always be clubs willing to take a chance on him.

“Even if it means dropping down to the Championship, there are clubs that would take him.

“I think as soon as his contract is up at Newcastle, somebody will look to make that move.”

Amid speculation over the future of Wilson, he may not be the only player to be leaving St James’ Park come the end of the season as Howe eyes new additions.

Brown told on 25 February that Newcastle plan to sell Nick Pope, but only if they can land a top-class replacement for him in the transfer window.

Similar to Wilson, the 32-year-old has also struggled with injury issues over the last couple of seasons, while his recent performances have been a concern.

Meanwhile, links with a move to sign Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford have led supporters to insist Newcastle should let Pope leave in search of being the number-one elsewhere.
