President Ruto confirmed his arrival in the country to attend the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the Heads of State and Government of the African Union.
“Looking forward to discussions on the reforms of the African Union and the election of the leadership of the African Union Commission, which former prime minister Raila Odinga is seeking to chair," said Ruto.
The highly anticipated election is scheduled for Saturday, February 15, with Raila’s candidacy drawing significant attention from both Kenyan leaders and citizens.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi praised the widespread support for Raila, noting that many Kenyans have travelled to Ethiopia on their own accord to back the opposition leader.
“I know people are asking about the size of the Kenyan delegation to Ethiopia. The level of patriotism and enthusiasm is very high," Mudavadi said.
"While the official delegation is led by the president, many Kenyans have come out of their own pockets to show support and patriotism. Some have even hired buses to make the journey, given the proximity between Kenya and Ethiopia. We deeply appreciate their encouragement and dedication to supporting the Kenyan candidate,” he added.
The election will be a key highlight of the 38th Ordinary Session, with discussions on reforms within the African Union also on the agenda.
Nicholus Kipkorir said:
"May Baba win. Our prayers are with him as he prepares to take up the leadership of the African Union."
Joel Njuguna Nikii wished:
"May God fight for Baba and bring the win home. We know victory is coming soon, possibly next week. And to our dear president of Kenya, keep up the good work of transforming Kenya."
Tiema K Farithi remarked:
"Somebody to tell the Djibouti candidate Raila likes taking an early lead."
Limo Chebwai Rixcam stated:
"All the best, Jakom."
Daniel Kipngetich Rotich suggested:
"Cheza kama wewe, please, and make sure Baba wins the election. And please ensure you declare Monday as a national holiday. Hehe 😀."
Meanwhile, some media reported that at least 100 MPs plan to travel to Ethiopia, sparking public concern over who will cover the costs of their travel, accommodation, and other expenses.
Mudavadi clarified that those choosing to travel to show solidarity with Raila are doing so voluntarily.
He emphasised that any delegations outside the government's mandate are not being funded by taxpayers' money.
